Ear/Other Facial Piercing Aftercare

Disclaimer
These guidelines are based on a combination of vast professional experience, common sense, research and extensive clinical practice. This is not to be considered a substitute for medical advice from a doctor. If you suspect an infection, seek medical attention immediately. Keep in mind that the removal of jewelry can lead to further complications. Be aware that many doctors have not received specific training regarding piercing. Your local piercer may be able to refer you to a piercing friendly medical professional.

Cleaning Solutions

  • H2Ocean purified sea salt aftercare spray

Instructions

  1. Apply a light spray of H2Ocean every 3-4 hours to both sides of piercing and the jewelry itself.  DO NOT wipe off the spray as it will quickly absorb into the skin (this is very important as sea salt has been found to improve circulation, which is critical during the healing period.  This doesn’t mean you should go rushing into the ocean or lake, as that salt water is not purified and has gross micro-organisms swimming around in it.  You wouldn’t want them getting into your piercing, would you?)

  2. If dried matter has formed on or near the piercing it is important that it be removed. This is best done after you shower and do all your bathroom “stuff” (washing your face, shaving, etc…)  Simply spray H2Ocean onto a cotton swab and gently remove any dried matter that has accumulated. If the dried matter is very dry and won’t move easily, apply a light mist of H2Ocean to let it soften.  Then remove the dried matter with a cotton swab.

  3. DO NOT over-spray the piercing as it will just run down away from the piercing, wasting the aftercare solution.

  4. By using the spray and/ or cotton swabs there is NEVER a reason your hands should touch the piercing.  If you touch the area make sure your hands are clean by using anti-bacterial soap, but only if it is absolutely necessary, if the jewelry becomes entangled or caught, for example.

  5. Be very careful when changing clothes, drying off with a towel and/ or engaging in any activity where the jewelry can become caught or entangled with something.  For obvious reasons you do not want to “snag” your jewelry on ANYTHING!

Other Tips

  • DO NOT use any “first-aid” type products to clean the piercing, such as alcohol, peroxide, bactine, betadine, Neosporin, bacitracin, etc…

  • Avoid submerging the piercing in bodies of water such as lakes, ponds, rivers, community/public pools and hot tubs until the piercing is fully healed.  If you have a well-maintained pool at home give it at least 4 weeks before swimming and monitor the piercing closely once you do decide to swim.  The ocean/sea is fine after 2 weeks as saltwater is obviously not a problem, but you never know what else is in the water. It is always recommended to clean the piercing once you are done swimming.

  • Use the t-shirt trick: dress your pillow in a large, clean t-shirt and turn it nightly; one clean t-shirt provides four clean surfaces for sleeping.

  • Maintain cleanliness of telephones, headphones, eyeglasses, helmets, hats and anything that contacts the pierced area.

  • Use caution when styling your hair and advise your stylist of a new or healing piercing.

What is Normal?

  • Cartilage piercings tend to be sensitive after they are pierced for a longer time period than non-cartilage piercings. It is not unusual to be awoken if you lie on or somehow move the piercing during sleep. Try to avoid bumping or touching the piercing during the initial healing period.  This means don’t put phone directly to your ear, or let your hair, hats or other objects cover over the piercing.

  • Slight swelling, light bleeding, bruising and/ or tenderness is normal.

  • BE PATIENT!  Healing times vary considerably, especially with cartilage piercings!!  Industrials and more “intricate” piercings will take longer to heal. It is vital to keep the piercing clean during the ENTIRE healing process.  Just because your friend’s piercing healed in 6 weeks doesn’t mean yours will!

  • DO NOT remove the jewelry during the healing process unless you no longer want the piercing.  If you do remove the jewelry, continue to clean the piercing as it heals and closes up.

  • It is very important to clean the piercing after you shower and apply any hair or facial products.  DO NOT allow any of these products on, in or near the piercing. This includes but is not limited to gels, conditioners, lotions, creams, oils, hair spray, hair dye, etc…
